About Colorado Cemeteries

Thanks for your interest in Colorado cemeteries. I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Kate Barnes, and I'm your host. I hope this will one day be the premier website on Colorado's final resting places.

Behind this website is a love of Colorado, a love of cemeteries, and a desire to preserve, record, and tell the tales of the people who built this state.

Among the websites that exist for people researching Colorado's burial grounds, I found a distinct lack of well-maintained sites, complete information, and organization. I decided to try and remedy that problem.

I have a background in online learning (which includes such tasks as web and instructional design, being in charge of multiple web sites, and teaching instructors how to teach online), and have lived in 7 different counties (Summit, Grand, Denver, Pueblo, Otero, Douglas and Clear Creek) in Colorado.

Besides the wonderful world of all things web, I've worked in publishing, grant writing, game design and theater. Some have called me a "geek of all trades."

I am assisted in this task by my sister, Carah Barnes, who helps me in the tasks of recording and mapping.

In a related vein, both Carah and I are members of the Friends of Riverside, a group working to preserve and protect Denver's oldest burial grounds, a site that was listed on Colorado's most endangered sites for 2008. Many of the pioneers of Denver and the state are buried at Riverside, and it is in need of much work.

I've collected a few book recommendations for visitors of this site, and hope to continue adding to list on a regular basis.

Many times I've thought myself crazy for thinking it's possible to make my idea of a site with a complete record of every person buried in Colorado. Perhaps I am. I think it's a worthwhile endeavor, and I hope that you'll go with me every step of the way.
